Strong Survivors

Strong Survivors is a free, 12-week program, provided in conjunction with SIU Carbondale's Department of Kinesiology,  to help cancer patients and survivors develop an exercise routine and make good, proactive choices about nutrition.

Any person who has experienced cancer is eligible to participate. You can enter the program at any point following your diagnosis. In addition, one of your caregivers can participate with you.

Two classes are taught each year and registration is limited. Classes are located at John A. Logan College at the Community Health Education Complex.

Strong Survivors Program has three goals:

  • Show you the benefits of good nutrition: During the program, we’ll teach you small steps to take each day to make healthy choices and to build new eating habits.
  • Encourage regular exercise under the supervision of a cancer exercise specialist: Getting your strength back is important. You will be given specific recommendations that take into account your current level of fitness, treatment issues and any non-cancer related issues you may have. Exercises will include low to moderate intensity resistance, balance, flexibility and aerobic training.
  • Improve your quality of life as a cancer survivor: You might be dealing with some side effects of treatment, but we’re here to help answer any questions and provide emotional support. Plus, after 12 weeks, you’ll have a community of new friends who understand what you’re going through.
